Miracle of Miracles! Danny Burstein Tapped for New Fiddler on the Roof Revival

Fiddler on the Roof is to have its fifth revival on Broadway in the fall of 2015, according to the New York Times. The production will be directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher, who has had informal talks with Danny Burstein to headline in the role of Tevye. No theater has yet been announced.

Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof takes place in Anatevka, a village in Tsarist Russia during the eve of the revolution. Tevye is a poor milkman who cares for his five daughters. While he and the rest of the elders in the village are deeply routed in tradition, his daughters’ forward thinking clashes with Tevye’s principles and causes a rift in the family. The score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick features the songs “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.” Choreography in this latest production will be by Hofesh Shechter, based on the work of original director/choreographer Jerome Robbins.

Burstein, who is currently readying to play Herr Schultz in the latest Broadway revival of Cabaret, has received four Tony nominations (for The Drowsy Chaperone, Follies and Sher's productions of Golden Boy and South Pacific). His other Broadway credits include The Snow Geese, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, A Class Act, Titanic, Company and many more.

Fiddler first opened on Broadway in 1964, winning nine Tonys. The most recent Great White revival opened in 2004 and starred Alfred Molina and later in the run, Harvey Fierstein.
